Admission into a Degree Program

General Requirements

High School Requirements
Degree program applicants must have completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (O.S.S.D.) with a minimum average of 65% including six ‘university preparatory’ Grade 12 courses. Four of these must be “U” level courses and the other two must be either “U” or “U/C” (also referred to as “M”). Students must have a minimum average of 60% in each eligible grade 12 course.

Ontario Academic Courses (OAC’s) or Grade 13 courses are considered equivalent courses under the former Ontario Secondary School curriculum.

Specific Course Requirements
One grade 12 “U” level English

Suggested Courses:

  • Another grade 12 “U” level English course
  • A grade 12 “U” level History course

English Courses
All degree applicants (including those who have completed an O.S.S.D.) must enroll in the English Grammar and Essay Writing courses during their first two semesters at Heritage. Degree applicants who:

  • Have an OAC or grade 12 U-level English grade of 60% or higher.
  • Have an out-of-province grade 12 university entrance level English grade of 60% or higher, or
  • Who have completed at least one year of Community College and who do not fit in category 1 or 2 above may attempt to test out of one or both of these English courses by taking the English Placement Test at the start of their first semester

The English Placement Test
The English Placement Test is a standard post-secondary entrance test designed to assess how well high school has prepared students for the world of undergraduate education. The test has two sections. The first section covers the basic elements of English grammar and usage. In the second section students are asked a question and required to respond with a short essay.

Students desiring to prepare in advance for the English Placement Test should consult the third edition of Thom Sunega’s Know More English and the second Canadian edition of Rosa, Eschholz and Roberts’ The Writer’s Brief Handbook.

Admission into the Qualifying Certificate
Students having a high school diploma but not meeting the degree entrance requirements may be admitted to the Qualifying Certificate. To complete this certificate, the student must complete six qualifying courses in their first year. Each student’s academic performance is assessed after the second semester. A grade point average of 2.00 in each course is required before the student is accepted into a degree program.

Admission into a One Year or Two Year Certificate Program
Applicants must have completed an O.S.S.D. or equivalent (Grade 12 Diploma) with a minimum 60% average.

Admission Requirements for Canadian Students from Provinces Outside Ontario
Students from the provinces and territories outside of Ontario must have a Grade 12 Diploma with requisite courses for university entrance. In the case of Quebec, students must have one year CEGEP, a McGill Senior School Certificate, or a Senior High School Leaving Certificate.

Admission Requirements for Home-Schooled Students -Schooled Students
The changed curriculum in Ontario does not guarantee that a home-schooled student now completing Grade 12 has met university entrance requirements. Unless a student can demonstrate that University entrance requirements have been met, prerequisite courses in their first year at Heritage will be required. Students must produce evidence that studies have been completed at an academic level equivalent to the minimum standard required for the desired program. Any transcripts or certificates achieved from a home schooling program should be submitted with the student’s application. Evidence may also include a letter from the principal of a traditional, or Christian, accredited high school confirming that the equivalent of an OSSD has been completed and indicating an estimated overall standing/ average based on a typical final year of high school studies.

Test scores in contests such as the Euclid Mathematics Contest, the Sir Isaac Newton Physics Contest, or the Chem 13 News Contest, as well as any SAT or ACT scores are helpful.

Admission Requirements for Mature Students
Students who have earned a Grade 12 Diploma but do not meet the qualifications for a degree program may apply for admission to Heritage with the following conditions:

  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older and have two years of work experience or significant life experience.
  • Applicants may be conditionally accepted for one year. Academic performance will be assessed after two semesters.
  • Only a limited number of mature students can be accepted each year.

Admission Requirements for International Students
Students from the United States of America
Applicants from grade 12 in the U.S.A. are assessed individually. Generally, students with a majority of courses taken at a college entrance level are granted university entrance status. American students must have a valid student visa that can be obtained at port of entry or at the nearest Canadian Consulate. A student will need an acceptance letter, evidence of sufficient funds/financial support, and health insurance to obtain a student visa. This visa must be presented prior to enrollment.

Students from All Other Countries
Students are advised to apply at least nine months before their planned enrollment date to allow time for processing, acquiring visas, etc. Students are admitted on the basis of graduation from a recognized high school. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide documentation that verifies the level of their high school training. Official Transcripts must be sent from all schools previously attended. If applicable, the student must provide a certified translation into English. Before registering, the student must show evidence of meeting Canadian immigration requirements (i.e., student visa, health coverage). International students are responsible for arranging their own medical coverage.

To obtain a visa, international students must apply through Canadian Immigration officials in their home country. They will want to see an official letter of acceptance, medical insurance, and evidence that sufficient funds or sponsorship are available. See the Canadian government website at www.cic.gc.ca to obtain more information on Canadian Immigration policies and procedures.

If the applicant’s first language is not English, the student must achieve a minimum score of 500 in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Results must be sent directly to Heritage. Tests can be obtained from TOEFL Services CN6151, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A. 08541- 6151. www.toefl.org.

Student Transfer from Other Institutions
Applicants from other post-secondary institutions must have received an honourable dismissal from each institution attended. Heritage must receive an official transcript from each school.

All transfer credit is subject to the discretion of the Registrar and Academic Dean. Please note that the awarding of transfer credits may be placed in the category of provisional if the entering student does not have good or outstanding grades (i.e., if the majority of the grades being transferred were in the “C” range, rather than the “B” to “A” range).

In order to graduate from Heritage, transfer students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at Heritage.

Transfer Credit for Students from Accredited Institutions
Equivalent courses (with a grade of “C” or above) from accredited institutions may be credited toward a degree program.

Transfer Credit for Students from Non-Accredited Institutions
In general, when assessing the status of students from unaccredited institutions, Heritage ascribes to the policy of the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE). In terms of current practices, Heritage applies the following methods for evaluating and validating credits earned at unaccredited institution.

Students applying from an institution with which Heritage has historic experience are assessed by how other students from the same institution have done at Heritage, and by precedents related to the percentage of transfer credits awarded. Heritage has a history of enrolling students from the following unaccredited institutions:

Summit College (see following details)

  • New Brunswick Bible Institute
  • Word of Life Bible Institute
  • New Tribes Bible Institute (Michigan)
  • Kawartha Lakes Bible College (Peterborough).

Presently, Heritage has a written agreement in place with Summit College whereby students who complete the one-year program at Summit (48 credit hours) can receive 32 credit hours at Heritage in a degree program. Current Summit students and graduates who desire more information should contact the Registrar’s Office.

Students applying from an institution with which Heritage has no previous experience are required to submit the following in addition to an official transcript:

  • Course syllabi
  • Faculty credentials
  • Grading standards
  • A school catalogue
